ESPNcricinfo has learned that Hardik has suffered minor damage to his ligament. The BCCI medical team will conduct a fitness test on Thursday before deciding the date of his return.
To compensate for Hardik’s all-round skills, India played Suryakumar Yadav against New Zealand and replaced Shardul Thakur with Mohammed Shami. Suryakumar was run out for 2 runs but Shami, playing his first match in this World Cup, took five wickets to help India restrict New Zealand to less than 300.
However, with the Lucknow pitch expected to help the spinners, India may consider replacing Shami with R Ashwin. This move will also provide support to the lower order batting.
India currently top the points table and are the only unbeaten team in the tournament with five wins from as many matches. After England, they have to play Sri Lanka on November 2 at Wankhede.
